MUZAFFARABAD: At least three people were killed by Indian shelling from across the Line of Control (LoC) on Tuesday, officials said.
According to reports, three civilians were killed and three others wounded by Indian shelling in Battal Sector in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
Shelling began in the Battal Sector at about 1:35pm, with Indian troops using both small and big arms to target civilian population of the area. “A mortar shell landed on the house of one Zakir Hussain Shah in Mandhol village, killing his 45-year old wife Kalsoom and six-year-old daughter Amna on the spot,” said police official Mir Abid, adding that another man was killed near a bridge in the area.
Pakistan also lodged a protest with the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) over the killing of civilians due to unprovoked firing by Indians, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.
Indian troops also resorted to unprovoked firing in the Sabzkot, Khuiratta, Nekrun, Sharda, Tander, Battal and Baroh sectors and targeted civilian population living in villages along the LoC.
The military’s media wing said that Pakistani troops were responding befittingly to Indian aggression and had targeted their posts. A heavy exchange of fire continued in Battal Sector, the ISPR said.
The Foreign Office also summoned India’s deputy high commissioner on Tuesday to condemn the firing, the government said in a statement.
